Full Newborn Session vs. Petite Newborn Session
Often I am asked about the difference between a full newborn session vs. mini newborn session. This is an excellent question, and one I think all potential customers should know the answer to before making any decisions.
For this reason, I’ve decided to put this post together. Below I’ve included information on what these session types include and who might be interested in each.
Full Newborn Session
A full session usually runs between 2 and 3 hours, and occasionally up to 4 hours. During this time, I pose baby on the beanbag and do props shots using buckets, bowls, and crates.
While I do like to capture as many poses and settings as possible, I also understand that feedings and diaper changes are necessary and I make plenty of time for this during a full session. Therefore, if your baby needs extra cuddling time or feeding time, then we work around that, ensuring everyone is calm and content throughout the process.
Depending on the number of feedings and changes a baby requires, one session typically results in a minimum of 25 images. That said, some sessions produce as many as 50 images. Parents and siblings are also included in this session type for no extra fee. This means a full newborn session is actually a great opportunity to capture some family photos as well.
A full session is the best option for those who would like a wide selection of images of their baby as well as the rest of the family. If the budget allows, this is the session I recommend to the majority of parents out there. Payment plans are always available and I’m easy to work with.

Petite Newborn Session
A petite session is only one hour long, with little to no flexibility in the amount of time spent shooting and is a smaller investment. I capture as many photos as I can during this time—whether baby is asleep or awake—and have only a limited amount of time for feedings and changes.
For these shorter sessions, it makes sense to do more wrapped shots in cute bowls & crates, as these are easier to capture quickly and well, whether or not baby is sleeping. That said, if baby is asleep for the first portion of the session and remains asleep throughout, I will often try to do a couple poses on the beanbag at the end.
While the quality of images captured during a petite session is the same as what you might receive from a full session, the quantity is much less. This means that this session is ideal for those who are on a tight budget and only need a few high-quality images. Payment plans are always available if needed.

No matter which session you choose, you’ll be glad you have some amazing images of these precious early weeks to hang on your walls and display in photo books. Make sure to book your session before the newborn days pass you by!
